New insurance product combines life disability and critical illness
By David Christianson, BA, CFP, R.F.P., TEPThis spring’s floods, fires and tornados have reminded us that we all face risks in our everyday lives. Sometimes we choose to “self-insure” these risks, other times we pay a premium to an insurance company, who takes on the risk and shares it by spreading it over a number of people.
In personal finance, we always [...]

Are your deposits insured?
By David Christianson, BA, CFP, R.F.P., TEPIn January, 2007, Ralph invested $90,000 into a mutual fund at his favourite bank. In March, 2009, after the stock market correction, the fund was worth $63,453.
Ralph wasn’t worried, as he assumed (incorrectly) that he had $100,000 of deposit insurance guarantee on that money, and asked the bank for his $90,000 back.
I won’t say they [...]
